The usual guidance is at least once a year, and under the General Binding Rules an annual empty is effectively the minimum standard unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise. Since January 2020, the General Binding Rules for small sewage discharges in England have made it clear that a septic tank must not discharge to a ditch, stream, river or any other surface water. It must discharge to ground through a properly functioning drainage field. If your tank still discharges to a watercourse, it has to be replaced or upgraded — and if you sell the property, that is normally dealt with before completion.
The rules also require the system to be maintained properly: emptied at least once a year, or as often as the manufacturer specifies, by a registered waste carrier — and you are expected to keep the records that prove it.
Large parts of Medway sit over the Chalk aquifer, which supplies a significant share of the county’s drinking water, and much of the North Downs falls inside Environment Agency Source Protection Zones. Coastal and estuarine parishes drain towards designated bathing waters and protected habitats on the Swale, the Stour and the Thames.
