Everything You Need To Know About Blocked Drains

Blocked drains can be a major inconvenience and if left untreated, can cause serious damage. Or worse, they can even begin to overflow as a result. That’s why it makes perfect sense to learn how to act quickly and fix a blocked drain before it becomes a major issue.

Libra Utility Services understands just how stressful a blocked drain can be, and we commit to providing expert drainage solutions to our customers. In this guide, we’ll identify the warning signs of a blocked drain, and help you determine whether you can fix the issue yourself or if it’s time to call in the professionals.

Blocked Drain Warning Signs

If you notice any of the following warning signs, your drain is likely blocked:

  • 1

Unpleasant Smell – Is your drainage system emitting a bad odour? A foul smell is a sure-fire indication that your drain is blocked. The slow decomposition of trapped food and other organic matter in the drainage pipe causes the odour. It’s typical for unpleasant smells to appear before any visible symptoms, so it’s crucial not to overlook any unusual odours that you can’t quickly identify.

  • 2
Slow Drainage – The second most obvious sign of a blocked drain is when the water in your shower, bath, sink and toilet starts to drain away more slowly. If one of these fixtures experiences issues, the blockage probably localises to a pipe connected to that specific appliance. If all fixtures seem to be backed up, the blockage is likely somewhere in the sewer drain. For example, if you flush the toilet and it causes water to rise in the shower, then the problem is very likely an issue in the sewer drain.

Unusual Sounds – If your drain is obstructed, it causes a gurgling sound when running the tap or flushing the toilet. The blockage causes disruption that pushes the air back up the pipe, leading to the sound.

  • 4
Raised Water Levels – If you observe that water levels rise more than usual when flushing the toilet, it’s possible that your drain is obstructed. Although it could be something that a plunger can quickly remove, if the water level rises to the point of overflowing, pinpointing the blockage might require professional help.

What Can You Do?

Reach for the Plunger

Fixing a single fixture in the house might be easy if it is blocked. Consider how many times you have dealt with a blocked shower due to hair or a clogged sink caused by food. If you think you may be able to fix the problem yourself, follow these steps:

1. Fill a plunger with water to help put more force on the source of the blockage and press and pull rapidly for about 30 seconds.

2. If the water drains quickly, then you’ve fixed the blockage.

3. If the water is draining slowly, keep plunging!

Natural Cleaners

If nothing happens, try pouring a small amount of baking soda down the plughole, followed by a cup of white vinegar. Let it bubble, wait 15 minutes, then pour boiling water down the drain.

DIY Snake Drain

As a last resort, you can try to make a DIY drain snake. This approach is most effective in showers. Follow these steps to unblock the drain:

1. Start with an empty 2-litre plastic bottle.

2. Cut the bottle around the circumference of the bottle to create a long, thin strip of plastic (it will look like a spiral as you’re cutting).

3. At one end, cut a few small ridges or teeth.

4. Once you have your homemade tool, insert it into the clogged drain, wiggle it around a bit when it’s as far deep as it will go, then pull it out. If you remove a large clump of hair or gunk, that’s a good sign that you removed the blockage.

What If The Drain Remains Blocked?

Unfortunately, in many cases, the blockage is not so easy to shift, and professional drain clearance is the only solution.

If you are experiencing blocked drains, it is crucial to address the issue as soon as possible. This will help you avoid further damage and potential health hazards. Ignoring a blocked drain can lead to water damage, foul odours, flooding and in some cases. In fact, it can even cause damage to the foundation of your property, resulting in costly repairs. Calling in the professionals is essential to ensure that they resolve the issue correctly and quickly.
